Barrow upon Soar Good Neighbour Scheme

A Good Neighbour Scheme is a community led project that links neighbours who need some support with local volunteers willing to help.  Not only is it a great way of meeting new people in your community, but also helps everyone to feel more connected with their neighbours.

Coronavirus Update:

November 2020:

Support to Vulnerable people can continue during Lockdown 2. Limited Home Befriending visits and Transport tasks will continue where both members and volunteers have agreed and follow the guidelines in place.  We are working alongside Helping Hands and the Baptist Church to provide help and support to people in the village.

September 2020:

Some Home Befriending visits will be restarted with a limited number of volunteers.  New safe working practices have been introduced to ensure all guidelines are being followed.

Transport tasks are also slowly being restarted with a limited number of volunteers and new safe working practices.

We are still able to offer a service to collect essential shopping items.

Other tasks will also be considered on a task by task basis.

March 2020:

Due to the recent government advice on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and social distancing for at-risk groups it has been decided that all of our services will be adjusted to enable us to continue to provide a service, albeit a reduced service.

Befriending visits will be replaced with more regular telephone calls from volunteers to keep our members company, confirm if they are well and provide an offer of further support such as collecting some essential shopping items.

Transport visits will also stop and instead will now be an offer of collecting essential shopping items.

Other tasks, such as garden tasks, DIY and help with IT and filling out forms, will also have to be put on hold and considered on a task by task basis.

Barrow upon Soar Good Neighbour Scheme launched 1st December 19

People who need some support will contact the scheme and requests will be co-ordinated before being allocated to a suitable volunteer.   Our contact number is 07771 625 591

Types of support will be available?

  • Befriending – cup of tea or a chat, maybe a game of cards
  • Transport -  a trip to the doctors or hospital, or hairdressers
  • Household - help with shopping, or gardening, or DIY such as changing a light bulb
  • Forms and IT - help with writing or reading a letter, using the internet

Support will be available to all residents of Barrow upon Soar; the only qualification is that you must be over 18 years of age.  The service will be free to use apart from some transport costs and parking expenses.  Lifts within the village will be free.  The scheme will be fully insured and all of our volunteers will have a DBS check at the enhanced level and will be wearing an ID badge giving you peace of mind that you are always receiving the best service.

We are always looking for more volunteers, and would love to discuss with you how you could get involved.

Co-op Local Community Fund

Barrow upon Soar Good Neighbour Scheme has been selected to take part in the Co-op Local Community Fund

When a Co-op member buys selected products or services from the Co-op they earn a five per cent reward for themselves, with a further one per cent for local causes like ours. Co-op members can choose a cause by going online www.coop.co.uk/membership. We really hope that you will visit the website and choose to support us.

If you’re not a member and would like to support us, you can join at your local store or online at www.coop.co.uk.

Money raised through the 1% can be generated anywhere in the UK, as long as a member is buying selected products or services from the Co-op Group.  The funding round opened on 27 October 2019 and will close on 24 October 2020.

Our Scheme is been supporting by the following Co-op branches:

Barrow upon Soar Co-op Food Store and Loughborough Funeral Care

We also have our own page on the Co-op website where you find information about we hope to use the funding for. The page also shows the amount of money raised to date.  https://membership.coop.co.uk/causes/39578
